Poems

as the day breaks

09MAR26

and the world turns

we know no news
me and the big dude
we both choose
freedom of solitude

we don't get caught
we are hard to find
we're in the thoughts
of our own mind

we are spectators
of all as we hide
we like our taters
raw or fried

as the day breaks
and the world turns
our way we make
and lessons learn

like the Psalms
the lessons they tell
all is calm
winds we sail

Since last fall when I first started making plans to make the motorcycle/drone videos this summer I have become a customer of Cycle Gear. They are part of a group of internet stores that includes Revzilla, J&P Cycles and Cycle Gear. I think the name of the parent company is COMOTO. The neat thing about Cycle Gear is that they have brick and mortar stores in several cities. The one in Louisville is on Hurstbourne just below Shelbyville Road. It is really nice to have a local store where you can go in and actually try things on and then have them order you whatever variation that you want. Returns are super simple. You just take the item to the store in the box it came in and they handle it. The guys that work there are all motorcycle riders and they understand that not everything you order is going to work out. And they all love to talk about anything that involves motorcycles.

The reason that I mention this is that several times a year Cycle Gear has a Bike Night. From 5 to 7pm they have food at the store and invite people to come and hang out. Some people ride their bikes but you don’t have to. As far as I can tell every Cycle Gear across the country does this on the same night. The next one will be 10MAR26. So if you have any interest in motorcycles or motorcycle culture or apparel you might want to check it out.

As far as the poem goes. I am pretty sure that bigfoot likes “fried taters.” And if he doesn’t I like them enough for both of us. If you have never been to the south or the farm or Appalachia fried taters aren’t just a food. They are an art form. I remember watching a video of Ricky Skaggs introducing members of Ralph Stanley’s band. A lot of the band members were from the Wise County area in Virginia. I remember Ricky Skaggs saying “Boy they sure know how to fry taters there.”

Enjoy your Monday. I hope that this will be a great week for you.

Poems

the owls

08MAR26

are not what they seem

life is hard
life is good
the security guard
of his woods

ignores the hands
on the clock
as he commands
his own block

a hazy sight
paving my rhymes
no daylight
savings time

Twin Peaks
on TV
mind speaks
as he flees

hear his howls
hear his screams
the owls
are not what they seem

in mysterious ways
totally bizarre
Purple Haze
without a guitar

This is another poem with a nod to David Lynch. “The owls are not what they seem” is a famous line from his TV show Twin Peaks. If you google that sentence you will find a wealth of information. And that information is kind of like the information on bigfoot. I’ll leave it up to you to decide if it makes any kind of sense : )

And we lost an hour over night so that would be on my mind this morning.

I am making progress on aquiring and learning to use all of the equipment that will be needed to get the motorcycle videos up on YouTube. And there is more of a sense of urgency in that as the weather begins to warm up.

Enjoy your Sunday.

there is more of life

02DEC25

to live than you know

ride & explore the lightning
float on the thunder
don't ignore enlightening
avoid that blunder

along the way decide
prepare to be awed
open up your inside
keep your mind broad

out there in the woods
go find your wings
it is not good
to think you know everything

be sharp as a knife
drink the moon's glow
there is more of life
to live than you know

patterns need to be broken
keep only what truly matters
all of this was spoken
in the Samurai Chatter

The Samurai Chatter line refers to the Sierra Sounds. These are recordings that were made in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the 1970’s. The Flash of Beauty You Tube Channel and film team has a new documentary coming out soon. It is called Voices in the Wilderness. It will focus on Ron Morehead and the other individuals that were up there experiencing and recording this phenomenon way back then. I will provide a link to the official trailer for the film below. And I will be informing you several times when the film is officially released.

This should be my last full day in the holler. I got the motorcycle insured and inspected yesterday. Hopefully by the time warm weather rolls around we will have the small fleet of motorcycles, the GoPro, and the drone ready to start a new series of videos in Scott County, Virginia where I grew up. Hopefully I will figure out how to edit it all and get it up on the blog and You Tube by that time.

I hope that this turns out to be great day for you!

Poems

because you see

29NOV25

they’ve got your number

they grow old
but remain young
to only the bold
is their song sung

as the orb glows
and floats on thru
what one knows
the others do too

think they hide now
kind of like theatre
you can decide now
or wait until later

know their trees
are not your lumber
because you see
they've got your number

We made it to Concord, North Carolina, and back. We picked up one bike. My brother attempted to purchase a bike that he liked but the negotiations reached an impasse. Ride Now Concord is a huge motorcycle store with a lot of brands. They also have a lot of 4 wheelers and side by sides. So it was very interesting to see all the different inventory. And it is always interesting to look at all of the used stuff. They have this thing that they do where they make you stand at the front of the store and ring a bell while they play this wild music and everyone claps. That bell was ringing all day long. So they move a lot of inventory.

We left in the dark and got home in the dark. It warmed up a little in the afternoon but for the most part it was a pretty cold day. And that slowed down the process. We had to wait for a brand new battery to be replaced in the bike. They initially told us that they were going to fill a new battery with acid and charge it. The sales person told me that he had no idea how long that would take. When I googled it the estimate was between 4 and 24 hours. I talked with an employee in the service department and he talked to his supervisor and they decided to to put in a different type of battery that did not need to be charged. So that got us back on the road a lot quicker.

My brother and I had not had a big adventure together in 50 years. Now we have had 2 in a period of 13 days. Who says motorcycles don’t have wings?

I hope that you have a big adventure in front of you. If you don’t maybe it’s time to plan one. Enjoy your Saturday! Remember to smile!

Poems

as the flag of Sasquatch

28NOV25

we fly with pride

it is early
that we rise
the moon is pearly
in the skies

warmly we dress
to cross state lines
we follow GPS
and road signs

on the road
the deal is complete
another bike we load
for the fleet

the bigfoot prepare
in the unknown
as the bike we pair
with a GoPro & a drone

they all watch
as we try to ride
as the flag of Sasquatch
we fly with pride

We are leaving at 0600 this morning. We will be traveling to Concord, North Carolina, to pick up a motorcycle. Hopefully we will make it back before dark. I hope that you have a great Friday!

Poems

on the other side

25NOV25

of the trees

empty is the plate
clean and white
the hanging apple waits
in plain site

promises to be great
taste just right
only it can sate
your appetite

the slithering snake
can make you crave
it knows how to break
the bonds that save

the angels fight
on mighty wings
they know its bite
they know its sting

as bigfoot hides
he agrees
on the other side
of the trees

a holy hymn
floats in the air
you can't see them
they're still there

I am still in the holler this morning. Now the plan is to remain here through Saturday morning. My brother and I are planning on making another trip to Concord, North Carolina on Friday to check on another motorcycle. That will be Black Friday but it is probably the only day that he can get free.

Yesterday I helped him split and load wood into a dump trailer. He has an outdoor wood stove that heats his house and garage through water that is piped back and forth. For the last few years he hasn’t had to cut any trees. Enough fall on the farm to keep him well supplied. There was a big storm that knocked down a lot of trees last year. I am pretty sure that they are too many to be to ever get to. The timber cutters will come in and timber the land. But they do not like to deal with the downed trees. They still cut them but it is dangerous. A tree on the ground has different pressures on it than a standing tree.

I hope that you deal with whatever pressures that come your way like a breeze today!

Poems

maybe just the illusion

21NOV25

of being in control

is ignorance a blessing
some how more kind
not wrecking or messing
with a closed mind

a silverware setting
a perfect table
safer not letting
horses out of the stable

a door closed
a candle unlit
maybe wisdom knows
we couldn't handle it

we drink the Kool-Aid
on top of the heap
a decision has been made
that prop we get to keep

some confusion
in the soul
maybe just the illusion
of being in control

the flag that blows
in freedom's winds
that flag knows
some big friends

I am still in the holler of my youth this morning. As I walk through the mountains and the memories that they hold I become more aware of what a special place this is for me. The motorcycles that we trailered in from Lexington KY, the GoPro, and the drone are all kind of like paintbrushes that I will use to try to paint them for you in the upcoming months. Hopefully you will be able to make sense out of what I come up with.

At this point I will probably stay through the weekend and return to Louisville on Monday morning. I want to try to avoid some of the Thanksgiving traffic.

I hope you have a great Friday!

SMILE : )

Poems

it enters the water

15NOV25

in the nude

beauty is kind
ready to be found
no need to grind
it's already ground

have to try it
you'll become a fan
you can buy it
in a can

make water hotter
to enhance the mood
it enters the water
in the nude

from a bean
the fun is insane
as the caffeine
runs thru my brain

it cooks & wakes
me from the dead
bigfoot looks & shakes
his big head

This morning my brother and I head for Central Kentucky Motorsports in Lexington KY to pick up 2 motorcycles to bring back to the holler. He is going to keep them in his farm’s garage for me. This will be our first big adventure together since we were teenagers. I’m really looking forward to it. One of these days I will write about the time we transported a tall stack(rick) of hay on the back of a farm truck.

I hope that you have a great Saturday and a wonderful weekend.

Poems

hope bigfoot doesn’t mind

14NOV25

all the noise

I'm not a scholar
but I can learn
just left the holler
now I return

my brother & a trailer
they wait for me
together we are sailors
the interstate our sea

our sails will soar
for distant ports
as we head for
Central KY Motorsports

all of the sharks
we'll try to dodge
2 motorbikes we'll park
in his garage

the checks are signed
for the toys
hope bigfoot doesn't mind
all the noise

The motorcycles are used bikes and they both have after market exhausts that are louder than the stock ones. That is where the lines about the noise come from. But from a safety standpoint a lot of motorcyclists like to have loud bikes. Motorcycles tend to be almost invisible to other drivers. And the theory is that if they are at least aware of a noise they may look a little more. And I am pretty sure that mobile phones have made being on a bike even more dangerous.

The holler and the surrounding hills and mountains have an incredible amount of deer crossing the road. Maybe the sound will help with that too. But the deer are known for being very unpredictable.

I am getting ready to load the car and get on the road. I hope that you have a great Friday. Maybe something unpredictable and wonderful will happen!

Poems

as we take flight

13NOV25

on the ground & in the air

it is well known
we're in the sky
we have the drone
for the eagle eye

they are eternal words
that the angels sing true
I've always heard
motorcycles have wings too

poems we write
similar sounds we pair
as we take flight
on the ground & in the air

it will be sweet
it will be true
we're saving a seat
just for you

I am returning to Virginia to join my brother as we travel back to Lexington KY to Central Kentucky Motorsports to pick up and trailer the bikes back to the holler. I plan to leave for the holler tomorrow. It should be a fun adventure. We love sitting around and talking about stuff we did together decades ago. Time for some new memories! I have a lot of errands to run today and loose ends to tie up before I leave. I usually stay longer in Louisville than 3 nights when I return. Time to shake things up : )

I hope that you are making new memories that both brighten your day now and in the future when you reflect on them!
