Eddie Would Go

26JUN25

listeners of the wind

we plow in the dark
hands on the handle
his hands on the bark
bigfoot lights the candle

our ignorance broken
we see a glimmer
we hear it mind spoken
a voice from a shimmer

our inner child is loosed
the know it all is gone
as we are introduced
n2 the world of the unknown

we have become a seer
a listener of the wind
and now we are freer
than we have ever been

we continue to plow
but are no longer slaves
now let's talk about the Aikaus
who rode the big waves

I had not planned on doing another post on Hawaii so soon but this poem and idea woke me up about 0415 this morning. So I guess we will try to make it to the beach on this wave. I just saw on the internet yesterday where Clyde Aikau had passed away about a month ago. I had always planned on doing a post on Eddie Would Go.

Around 2001 I think we were leaving the Safeway on Kam Highway in Kapolei and I kept on seeing these bumper stickers that said Eddie Would Go. So I immediately found out that they were for Eddie Aikau who had been a legendary lifeguard and big wave surfer at Waimea Bay.

In 1968 Eddie was the first lifeguard hired by the City & County of Honolulu for the North Shore. He had left school at 16 and had been working at the Dole pineapple cannery. No one was lost while he worked as a lifeguard at Waimea. In 1978 he volunteered to be a crew member on the Hokule’a. That is a double hulled voyaging canoe used by the Polynesian Voyaging Society to retrace the routes and methods of the ancient Hawaiians and Polynesians.

The Hokule’a left Hawaii on March 16, 1978. After developing a leak the vessel capsized about 12 miles south of Moloka’i. Eddie volunteered to take his surfboard and swim to Lana’i to get help. Actually he insisted against the captain’s reservations to leave the vessel and go for help. If you read about or watch many of the videos about this tragedy there is a lot of discussion about Eddie convincing the captain to let him go. (Eddie Would Go). Eddie was last seen by the members of the crew taking off his life jacket so he could paddle on his surfboard better. The crew was later rescued by the Coast Guard. According to Wikipedia the search for Eddie’s body was the largest in Hawaiian history.

That is a very brief account of the whole thing. There are many articles and videos on the internet that can catch you up to speed. He has been memorialized with one of the most famous surfing competitions in the world. Quicksilver sponsored “The Eddie” up until 2016. The first one was in 1985. It was held at Sunset Beach. In 1987 the event moved to Waimea Bay and Clyde Aikau won the contest. Hollywood could not make up a better story than Eddie’s little brother winning it the first year at Waimea.

The contest itself has several restrictions. It can only proceed if the waves are a minimum height of 30 feet. I have heard this explained several different ways. And honestly I still don’t have clear understanding of it. Wikipedia says that it has to be a minimum of a 20 feet open-ocean swell that translates to a wave face height of 30 feet. Let’s just say the waves have be too big for most mortals to consider paddling their boards into. And they do have to swim out into the waves with their boards. Jet skis are not allowed to tow surfers out.

Supposedly the phrase “Eddie would Go” was coined by surfer Mark Foo when they were deciding whether or not to proceed with the contest because of the dangerously high waves. Quicksilver has entire surf stores named Eddie Would Go. Or they did. They stopped sponsoring the contest in 2016 and the Aikau family sought out local sponsors to sponsor the event when the waves were high enough. The contest allows 28 surfers to participate.

Hawaii is a place of traffic problems. And the Kam Highway on the North Shore is a 2 lane highway. You can google some of the traffic and parking jams when there is a big surf contest on the north shore. There are even traffic and parking jams when the waves are high and people just want to drive out and park along the highway to watch them.

I am including the links to 3 short videos on the Aikaus. The first one is a short segment of an ESPN film on Eddie. The second one is of Clyde riding his last time at The Eddie. The third one is of Clyde leading a group of surfers out at Waimea before the contest to do the circle ceremony. The news station is using the footage to announce his death. It is almost achingly and hauntingly beautiful. In that third film when he raises his arm and finger in the sky from 1:18 to 1:22 you can see the white bell tower of St. Peter and Paul Church behind him. If you are ever on the North Shore you can use that landmark from almost any where up and down the coast to know where Waimea is.

If you only have time to watch one of the 3 clips watch the last one. Because honestly that is the VIBE that we should all try to be in.

bigfoot – sailor of fortune

25JUN25

bigfoot wisdom sails

bigfoot is a book
not for our shelves
but to take a look
in to ourselves

he makes it clearer
he calls roll
he acts as a mirror
for our soul

makes sure we get it
the carpenter's claims
his lines are poetic
like the King James

from Heaven cast
written on sails
tied to a ship's mast
that is beyond the veil

words that are immortal
from a throne
move thru a portal
thru the unknown

his wisdom works
and it is free
as it all lurks
behind a big tree

The new menu is in place. It is a drop down menu. It will be a way to find different topics. So far I have only put one post in the Music non Hawaiian section. The menu will be links to specific posts. The drone flyover section will be links straight to the you tube videos.

Today I am linking a video to a performance by the Makaha Sons of Ni’hau. They are a very important band in the Hawaiian music scene & history. The name of the song is Sailors of Fortune. Now you know where I got the title to the blog post and the poem. They may be my favorite band. And that is saying something since most of their songs are sung in Hawaiian and I don’t know the meaning of the words. But don’t panic. I picked a song that they do in English as their introduction to you.

You may recognize the guy in the middle. That is IZ short for Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. He is probably the most famous Hawaiian musician of all time. After he went solo in 1993 they shortened their name to the Makaha Sons. It would be almost impossible to express or convey the amount of affection that the Hawaiian people hold for IZ and the Makaha Sons still today.

That being said this will probably be the first post listed in the Hawaii section of the menu. I hope that you enjoy the Makaha Sons of Ni’hau. I hope that they give you a smile that sails with you thru your day!

the bigfoot VIBE

24JUN25

OUR VIBE

a moment in time
a memory to save
a goofy rhyme
a friendly wave

silly and sweet
all things good
turn our street
into a neighborhood

in a matter of speaking
fun is free
some see it peeking
around a tree

we'll keep watch
all around here
just in case sasquatch
decides to appear

I tried to redo the menu yesterday. It appears to be working on mobile devices. But it doesn’t work yet on the computer screen. I have basically replaced the Manifesto heading with a drop down menu. The manifesto will be included in the drop down menu. It will probably be incorporated into a purpose page along with today’s poem. I wrote this poem back in March when I was constructing the blog website.

I capitalized the title of the poem for a reason. The VIBE is very important. You don’t have to look very long into the world of bigfoot before you start reading about vibrational frequency. A lot of people think that bigfoot can control his vibrational frequency. There is a lot of talk about curiosity and appreciation being a high vibrational frequency and that fear is a low vibrational frequency. A lot of this is in the territory of the psychics and those who meditate. And those are another two words that you will find over and over in the world of bigfoot.

Nikola Tesla said, “If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency, and vibration.”

Whatever you come to believe about the VIBE. It is a lot like your smile. It is your car. Your hand is on the steering wheel. It is something that you control. Now we all know that we cannot control the traffic. Most of us know it anyway…

those who have never read that page
well that is what you call road rage

But you can set your VIBE. So I suggest that you set your vibrational frequency high like they think that bigfoot does. On the blog we try to fly high. Other than the downed drone post from last week it is pretty much upbeat.

I am including links to two short videos from A Flash of Beauty. One is from an interview with Tish Paquette and the other is Mel Skahan. These short videos are from their full interviews that you might want to check out at A Flash of Beauty. The 2 videos kind of come at the VIBE from different angles. But there seem to be a lot of angles when you approach the world of crazy! You probably will want to…

Poems

open skies open eyes

under open skies

what the eyes see
when they are closed
all of their trees
have been bulldozed

got it locked
like a vault
the whole block
covered in asphalt

no lofty quotes
to be displayed
only bank notes
to be paid

short breaths they took
made them dead
bigfoot slowly looks
and shakes his head

important things mind spoken
strong the rhyme flows
their wings were broken
a long time ago

there he waits
under open skies
its never too late
to open your eyes

23JUN25

Sorry I forgot to put that at the top. And I am running late for an eye doctor appointment this morning. Seems like every poem I wrote this morning had something to do with seeing or vision. I wonder why : )

One story about eyes before I go. I wear a pair of eyeglass frames that are kind of like the Clark Kent ones from the 50’s. When I was in the military they were the standard military issue frames. I always kind of knew that if I ever had to wear glasses those would be the ones that I would choose. So when I finally had to start wearing glasses I started trying to find the right frames. It took about 2 years to get the right ones.

I called a company in Greenville South Carolina named Shuron. I was going to order a pair of frames called Sidewinders. I told the guy that I was trying to find glasses that looked like the Army glasses in the 80’s. He told me that what I wanted was a frame called the Freeway. He said that Shuron had a contract to supply the military in the 80’s and that was the frame that they shipped. Mission accomplished!

In the those days all of the enlisted men had a nickname for those glasses. They called them BCD’s. That stands for birth control devices. Their reasoning was that if you were sporting those glasses no body was getting pregnant. And I am pretty sure I could probably find a more flattering look.

But those glasses do the same thing that bigfoot and that the ukulele does. They just give me the biggest goofiest smile.

Batman & bigfoot

do not dread
the unknown
paint it red
like the batphone

it maybe fun there
let your fear pass
put it under
some clear glass

have to be nimble
your flight try
shine your bat symbol
in the night sky

take an oath
and be brave
as you both
live in a cave

you will charge
issue no bill
living large
in the batmobile

on your cape
you will put
he's not an ape
he's a bigfoot

Enjoy your Sunday! Leave the crime fighting to those heroes that are…

out there controlling
all of the traffic
and always rolling
encased in graphics

I appreciate and fully support law enforcement. Wave to them and as you do…

Poems

bigfoot is fun

21JUN25

cowboy bigfoot

once you realize
the unknown is bigger
it opens your eyes
and pulls a trigger

creativity is a gun
a hoot to shoot
it is fun
scoot in it's boot

wearing them is freeing
put on some spurs
think about a being
that always blurs

the mystical unlocks
your spirit soars
listen to a jukebox
thru swinging doors

do not fear
it's the right path 2 be on
it is clear
lit by bright neon

mustache will need trimmin
a little in your flashy ride
you'll like your women
a little on the trashy side

go find the fun
that you are owed
the accelerator gun
on the open road

that's all good
and well put
but you could
just study bigfoot

what he's done
study his example
think your fun
will be more than ample

I want to make sure and explain the women a little on the trashy side line. That is from a country music song titled “I Like My Women a Little On the Trashy Side.” It was sung by Jerry Jeff Walker in 1989 and Confederate Railroad in 1993. There is a video on you tube of Confederate Railroad doing the song and it is pretty hilarious. Supposedly Jerry Jeff Walker was in a bar and heard a bartender perform the song and asked him to come to his room and teach it to him. But I want to make it clear that I am not really comfortable labeling people as trashy or judging a book by its cover. But in this situation it is pretty hilarious. I mean the video and song not my poem. Still if anyone is offended or put off by it as Kurt Cobain would say “All Apologies.”

Today is the first time that I have typed in a date on a blog post. WordPress puts a date on the blog post. You can only see it if you are on a computer and you click on the individual post and it pops up to fill the screen. Usually you cannot see the date if you leave the posts in a 3 column wide view. And I don’t think you can see it on a mobile device.

I am still working on getting the video edited. Once I get this first one on the blog it will have established a path that will be much easier to travel the next time. To me this video is almost like a bulldozer clearing a path. And I’m not sure bigfoot would like that imagery. I hope to have the new menu in place by the beginning of July.

Enjoy your Saturday. Flash your smile!

Poems

bigfoot blog is evolving

the pirate’s plank

the page is blank
under the pen's tip
walk the pirate's plank
on this blog's ship

into the waves
one last time
only thing that can save
is a bigfoot rhyme

tall the ship's sails
stand beneath there
look into the veil
and into the ether

my chains are broken
the poem is understood
received it mindspoken
from the woods

bigfoot is not an ape
have to confess it's true
he wears a cape
a telepath to the rescue

helps set me free
my mind is scanned
helps me see
more than I understand

I am still working on the video editing of the drone footage. The editing software has a little steeper learning curve than some of the others. But I think once I get familiar with it that it will be able to do anything that I will need to do in this blog. That is the plan anyway.

The blog went over 50 posts a few days ago. So I am also conceptually reorganizing the menu. At some point readers should be able to go to the menu and find topics organized in a way so that they can quickly find videos or articles on a particular topic that they are curious about or interested in.

I hope that you enjoy your day!

Rich Germeau sees bigfoot

water on fire

bigfoot is all set
has all he desires
water out of our faucets
it catches on fire

so who is smarter
& able to smile
Sergeant Carter
or Gomer Pyle

take a break
asphalt and gravel
maybe take
road less traveled

just how much
to make you whole
and able to touch
your own soul

would it hurt
I dare you to beat
feeling some dirt
under your bare feet

Today I am including a short (6:35 minute) video on Rich Germeau’s bigfoot encounter at Lonesome Creek. At the time he was a police officer and a former Marine. So since Gomer Pile and Sergeant Carter were both Marines I think that this video and the poem fit pretty well together. Like Colonel Hannibal Smith used to say on the A-Team TV show “I love it when a plan comes together.” Although admittedly what I’ve done here is a little less impressive than what they usually pulled off in their one hour spot.

In this video I think he does a pretty good job of describing the mental and emotional steps that many people seem to go thru when they are confronted by something that they “know” does not exist. These type of details are repeated over and over again in different accounts by different people.

I hope you enjoy the video. Find lots of reasons to smile today.

Poems

in bigfoot’s zoo

mysterious dudes

the book is new
the pages stick
the glasses you look through
are hazy and thick

what you study
are mysterious dudes
are they your buddies
if they elude

read the page
and find it true
you are in a cage
in bigfoot's zoo

wisdom you receive
in your mind a voice
then he leaves
always his choice

in a daze
you wade and swim
you have always
been displayed for him

Short post today. I am working on the drone footage and planning to try and redo the menu and structure of the blog. Hope you have a nice day and smile quite a bit : )

video

a drone goes down

51 50 Drones

the pain we see
could not be worse
his little buddy flies free
in a you tube hearse

a video devotional
the tears rain
it is emotional
feel his pain

a beloved drone
a staggering loss
as Russ alone
bears the cost

emotion is strong
the tears flow
with a song
from 28 years ago

memories are embers
keep some fire
we have to remember
bigfoot's desires

it should be known
along with our prayers
bigfoot's no fly zone
is bigger than ours

as our thoughts
fly with love
bigfoot hates getting caught
and surprised from above

our hearts broke
on this day
bigfoot cloaks
and walks away

If you have been reading the blog you know I have recently purchased a drone. The process of learning to fly it and capture and edit footage that I can put on the blog has me consuming a lot of internet instructional videos. A lot of it is very good. And it is pretty important to watch it. Most of the stuff that I was planning to do with the drone is not even allowed. It is important to be aware of All the restriction before you put it in the air. I have watched more of Russ’s videos from 51 Drones than anyone else. He does a very good job and he always keeps them upbeat and entertaining.

A good example of that is the you tube short video that he put up yesterday. If you are curious about drones at all you should check out his videos. I was planning on getting a drone that weighed less than 250 grams so that I could avoid a lot of the restrictions. But after I watched one of his videos I learned that you still have almost the same restrictions on the smaller drones. It dramatically increased the number of drones that I could consider purchasing.

After this post and the one I did last Thursday on “ai bigfoot is stupid fun” you are probably going to think that I watch too many clowns. Well my response to that is that I’m not really joking when I tell you at the end of each post that it is important to smile.

I hope that Russ’s you tube short video (14 seconds) makes you smile.
